Why does Google Maps miss bike lanes in Corpus Christi… and how can we fix it?
If you’ve ever turned on the bike layer in Google Maps and were confused you’re not alone in your frustration. The good news is you can fix this!
Here’s how 👇
1️⃣ Ask the City & MPO to publish bike data
Google doesn’t magically know where bike lanes are. It relies on public GIS maps from cities and MPOs. When bike infrastructure isn’t published clearly or publicly, it gets missed.
✅ Asking for open, accurate bike maps helps everyone, including residents, visitors, and planners.

2️⃣ Help improve OpenStreetMap
OpenStreetMap is a free, community-edited map that Google and many other platforms rely on.
✅ Anyone can contribute.
✅ Updating bike lanes, multi-use paths, and trails helps fix gaps in real time.
3️⃣ Better data = better directions
When accurate bike data exists, Google Maps does update.
✅ More complete routes
✅ Safer navigation
✅ Fewer “bike lane disappears” moments
Corpus Christi’s bike network deserves to show up properly and community voices matter in making that happen.
